NEW YORK (AP) — The New York International Olive Oil Competition (NYIOOC) is a competition that takes place all over the globe. Producers from 20 California counties participated, and the Central Coast was ready to compete.
“The competition gives our olive oil an honest, objective worldwide assessment, which matters a lot to our customers,” said Lynn Israelit of Spanish Oaks Ranch. “It assures them that they are purchasing excellent olive oils that are among the finest in the world!”
San Miguel Olive Farm, Barton Olive Oil Company, Pasolivo, Tofino Estate, Spanish Oaks Ranch, Rancho Azul y Oro Olive Farm, Boccabella Farms, Enzo Olive Oil, Belle Farms, and The Groves on 41 all received gold awards. Winning the gold is a huge accomplishment for the milliners who put all into creating the finest.

“We are extremely pleased to receive a Gold Medal from the NYIOOC, since it is the world’s biggest and most renowned olive oil competition,” stated Rancho Azul y Oro Olive Oil Farm’s Kathryn Keeler.
Karen Tallent of The Groves on 41 stated, “It’s another wonderful affirmation from the elite in the olive oil world that we’re getting it properly.”

The NYIOOC’s judging panel consists of “a team of renowned specialists who follow a rigorous scientific procedure to evaluate each oil for its sensory features and attributes… The NYIOOC is by far the biggest and most comprehensive evaluation of olive oils from across the globe. Producers, importers, distributors, chefs, food service workers, and journalists all pay attention to the competition’s results.”
California growers made a strong showing at NYIOOC this year, but the Central Coast had the greatest number of Gold Medal winners in the state.
“Our olive oil’s exceptional quality is due to our area’s unique microclimate and soil, as well as a lot of patience and attention to detail!” Belle Farms’ Marguerite Remde said.
The Central Coast’s better olive oils, according to producers, are due in part to our unique environment and in part to a passion for knowledge, community, and cooperation among local producers.

“I believe the Central Coast area produces great olive oil in part because of the ideal Mediterranean environment we all enjoy, but also because we concentrate on industry-leading methods for growing, harvesting, and storing our oils,” Israelit added. Local farmer groups that concentrate on education and cooperation have a long history in our region. Producers in SLO [San Luis Obispo] county collaborate to learn about best practices and assist one another in implementing them.”
