The Queen and Kate Middleton have congratulated Emma Raducanu on her remarkable straight-sets win at the US Open.
Kate, the Lawn Tennis Association’s patron, was one of the first to express her delight.
In a message marked C for Catherine, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s Twitter account wrote: ‘Congratulations on your incredible performances and historic Grand Slam win, @EmmaRaducanu! We are all very proud of you. Congratulations on your incredible accomplishments in this year’s #USOpen, @LeylahFernandez; it’s been a joy to watch you compete. C.’
‘It is a wonderful accomplishment at such a young age, and is testimony to your hard work and commitment,’ the Queen said on Twitter.
A customized greeting from the queen was subsequently published by Buckingham Palace.
‘I offer my congrats on your victory in the United States Open Tennis Championships,’ it read.
‘At such a young age, it is a great accomplishment, and it is a testimony to your hard work and commitment.’ I have no doubt that your and your opponent Leylah Fernandez’s excellent performances will inspire the future generation of tennis players.
‘I extend my heartfelt congratulations to you and your many supporters.’

Boris Johnson, the Prime Minister, also expressed his congratulations. ‘What a fantastic match!’ he tweeted. @EmmaRaducanu deserves a lot of praise. We are all very proud of you since you shown amazing talent, elegance, and bravery.’
‘What a winner,’ remarked Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer. A genuine hero in the eyes of the British people. Congratulations on your inspiring victory, @EmmaRaducanu. Without losing a set, he progressed from qualifier to champion. This is a fantastic accomplishment.’
Nicola Sturgeon, Scotland’s First Minister, expressed her compliments.
‘Wow! This is amazing! @EmmaRaducanu is a role model, a champion, and a star. ‘Congratulations!’ she said on Twitter.
‘I believe tonight will be one of those sports events that will be remembered for decades.’
‘Two fantastic players who will undoubtedly dominate women’s tennis for many years.’

Meanwhile, Raducanu’s home club in Beckenham, South East London, erupted in applause for every point she scored against Leylah Fernandez in New York.
Raducanu’s old instructors, who were delighted with her achievement, were among those watching at Parklangley.
When she won, both her former coach, Harry Bushnell, and her former strength and conditioning trainer, Suzanne Williams, were overcome with passion and tears.
Both called the victory “unbelievable,” but said they never questioned her.
